Your Driving Instructors for Old Sarum
I became an instructor as I loved driving and found a lot of joy in teaching in a previous job. I genuinely love the job and a lot of passion for what I do. Outside of this, you’ll find me in the gym, up a mountain or at the side of a lake, trying to catch some large carp.
I’ve been a driving instructor for over 20 years now — how time flies! I still teach with passion and a sense of fun, because I believe we all learn quicker when we’re enjoying ourselves.
Outside of lessons, I’ve recently discovered a love for gardening (I must be getting old!). I have two grown-up children who are now enjoying their independence behind the wheel, which gives me more time for long walks with my dog — and the occasional well-earned holiday.
Old Sarum Driving Lessons FAQs
I'm really nervous about driving. Can you help me build confidence?
Absolutely, it’s our main focus. We specialise in teaching nervous learners and understand how overwhelming driving can feel at first. We’ll start with quieter roads in Old Sarum, building your skills gradually before introducing busier conditions. Many of our most anxious students have successfully passed their tests with our patient, supportive approach.
How does being so close to Salisbury affect my lessons?
It’s a significant advantage for learning. The journey to the test centre and back takes only 10-20 minutes total, meaning the vast majority of each lesson is focused practice in Salisbury on test-standard roads. You’re getting maximum value from your lesson time while still having the option to practice locally when building initial confidence.
Can you collect me anywhere in Old Sarum?
Yes, we pick up from anywhere in Old Sarum that’s convenient for you. Just provide your address and we’ll arrange collection from your home. We know the area well and we’re completely flexible about pickup locations.
What if I need more time than average to feel ready for my test?
That’s completely normal, particularly for nervous learners. Everyone progresses at their own pace and we never pressure you to test before you’re genuinely ready. Testing when you’re properly prepared gives you the best chance of passing first time, which saves money and avoids the setback of failure.
Will I get enough variety in my practice?
Definitely, yes. Old Sarum provides residential practice, the A345 gives A-road experience, and being so close to Salisbury means you’ll spend plenty of time on the exact roads and conditions that appear in the test. You’ll be well-prepared for all scenarios without wasting time on long journeys.
Do you offer automatic lessons?
No — we teach manual lessons only.
Do you teach in the evenings or at weekends?
Yes. We offer weekdays and evenings but we don’t currently offer weekend lessons. Our lessons do fill up fast so they’re all subject to availability.
How do I book?
How long is a lesson?
Lessons are booked in 2‑hour blocks (£85).
I failed before with another instructor – can you help?
We can’t promise miracles, but we can promise a different approach. Over 150 five-star reviews say we’re pretty good at this. We’ll figure out what went wrong before, work on the specific issues, and get you test-ready properly. Loads of our students have been through failed tests with other instructors and passed with us.

Learning to Drive from Old Sarum
Old Sarum’s mix of residential roads and proximity to the A345 provides excellent variety for developing your driving skills without long journeys. The area combines modern housing estate driving with access to faster A-roads, giving you progressive experience as you build confidence through each lesson.
Being just two miles from Salisbury city centre means the journey to the test centre takes only 5-10 minutes each way. This minimal travel time means the vast majority of each lesson focuses on test-standard practice in Salisbury itself, covering exactly the roads and conditions you’ll face on your actual test. You’re getting maximum value from your lesson time.
For nervous learners, Old Sarum works particularly well because we can begin with practice around the quieter residential areas. Establishing fundamental skills in familiar surroundings before introducing busier traffic makes the progression feel manageable rather than overwhelming at each stage of your learning.
The views across Salisbury Plain and proximity to the historic hillfort site make Old Sarum distinctive, but more importantly for learning, the road layout provides all the variety you need to become a competent driver without spending half your lesson travelling.

View All Testimonials“So grateful I had Rich as my instructor. He’s punctual, organised and an incredible teacher with a calm but informative style. We were on a tight schedule before my test date and he tailored the lessons and progression to my needs and requirements. Would recommend him to anyone. Thanks rich!”
“I started driving later in life and have heard “horror stories” about driving instructors from my wife and friends over the years and I can hand on heart say how lucky I am that Rich was my driving instructor.
His mixture of honesty, laughter and firmness (when I really needed it) was exactly what I needed and it helped get my over my initial anxieties about driving. Rich got my through every hurdle and yesterday I passed my driving test the first time round, something I genuinely thought was impossible.
I will miss our time in the car and I would recommend Rich and the passmaster school to anyone learning to drive, whether they be younger or (like me) a little older. Worth every penny and found a mate in the process!”
“I was very nervous to start driving and being in the car with a stranger but Rich is patient and funny and really puts worries at ease. He was incredible with me when I would ask blunt or silly questions, always able to talk through things when I didn’t understand. And made time for me months later when I booked a second test and then passed!! 100% recommend him!”
“I would highly recommend Rich to anyone looking for driving lessons.
Rich took me from no car driving experience at all to test ready in two months, with an average of just over one 2 hour lesson per week.
Rich had a clear and effective strategy to develop my driving. Every lesson, I felt I was being appropriately challenged outside my comfort zone. And every lesson, I felt I made substantial progress.
Rich always remained calm and understanding in our lessons. I felt totally comfortable thinking aloud, and felt that no question was too basic to ask. I was especially impressed by how insightful Rich was. Whenever something went wrong, Rich was able to fully talk me through what had happened and what I needed to adjust. He constantly provided great driving tips, ranging from control of my own vehicle to how my actions affected the perceptions of other road users.”
“Rich is amazing!! such a good teacher and made a friend in him too! so patient and easy to chat to and made learning to drive so fun – I passed first time with 3 minors and I felt well prepared for my test. I miss having my weekly lessons with him and would highly recommend to anyone looking to pass their test with ease and quickly :)”
“I could not have asked for a more patient, fun, chilled, calm and helpful driving instructor. Rich was absolutely brilliant. I’d never learned to drive before and at 37 (and being totally new to Salisbury) was a bit overwhelmed to say the least! This week I passed first time with one minor fault and am so grateful for the work Rich put in. He was incredibly clear and positive, always encouraging and pleasant to drive with and just a wonderful all round teacher. After a terrible experience with Mike Del Grosso (another Salisbury instructor that I really would not recommend) I landed on my feet here. If he’s available, book him in, or if not, wait til he is, just cannot recommend enough.”
“I wholeheartedly recommend Passmaster Driving School, and through Rich’s lessons I passed my test first time with no minors.
Rich is professional, kind, approachable and takes the time to make sure you’re comfortable with everything. He really makes you feel at ease and I’ve had a great time learning with him.
Thanks so much Passmaster!”
“Couldn’t recommend Rich more highly as a driving instructor! Patient, supportive and knowledgeable teacher who always put me at ease as an anxious driver, who helped me build my confidence and knew when to push me outside my comfort zone. Will be recommending Rich to anyone as he made learning to drive such a fun and enjoyable experience and helped me pass first time with just 6 months learning ! Will greatly miss my weekly lessons with him.”
“Extremely glad and grateful i had rich as a driving instructor, i passed first time and enjoyed every lesson. I never felt stressed or uncomfortable in my lessons which helped me to grow my confidence. I highly recommend because he was a great instructor and always made me laugh. Will definitely miss my lessons, thank you sm for helping me pass!”
