Driving Lessons Throughout Larkhill
We teach students throughout Larkhill garrison and surrounding areas. Whether you’re based at the Royal Artillery Barracks, living in garrison accommodation, or anywhere across this military community, we come to you.
Working around garrison life? Shift patterns, training exercises, deployments, courses at the Royal School of Artillery? We understand military schedules and arrange lessons that fit around them rather than forcing you into rigid slots. Many Larkhill students feel nervous about learning to drive, which is completely normal when you’re juggling military commitments and learning a new skill. We focus on building confidence at your pace with no pressure or rushing.
Larkhill sits about 10 miles from Salisbury test centre, which works out to roughly 25 minutes by road. You’ll drive this route twice every lesson, so by test day it feels second nature rather than some unfamiliar journey that adds stress.

Instructors Who Work With Larkhill Life
I became an instructor as I loved driving and found a lot of joy in teaching in a previous job. I genuinely love the job and a lot of passion for what I do. Outside of this, you’ll find me in the gym, up a mountain or at the side of a lake, trying to catch some large carp.
I’ve been a driving instructor for over 20 years now — how time flies! I still teach with passion and a sense of fun, because I believe we all learn quicker when we’re enjoying ourselves.
Outside of lessons, I’ve recently discovered a love for gardening (I must be getting old!). I have two grown-up children who are now enjoying their independence behind the wheel, which gives me more time for long walks with my dog — and the occasional well-earned holiday.
Larkhill Driving Lessons FAQs
Can you work around military shifts and garrison life?
Yes, completely. We’ve taught loads of people from Larkhill garrison over the years and we’re used to the irregular schedules, exercises, courses, and last-minute changes. Just be upfront about your situation and we’ll sort something that works. Military life is unpredictable, so we build flexibility into how we work.
Is 10 miles to Salisbury going to eat up too much lesson time?
No, that 25 minutes each way is actual driving practice on proper roads building real skills. You’re learning throughout, not just being driven around as a passenger. Plus you’ll know the test route inside out by exam day, which is gold when everything else feels stressful. Most of your time is still focused practice in Salisbury anyway.
I'm nervous about driving. Will that be a problem?
Not at all. We focus on nervous learners and understand that anxiety about driving is normal, particularly when you’re already dealing with military life and all its pressures. We’ll build your confidence gradually, starting with easier roads before introducing busier conditions. Many of our most anxious students have successfully passed their tests with our patient approach.
Where exactly do you pick up from in Larkhill?
Wherever suits you best. Barracks gates, garrison accommodation, Packway area, literally anywhere that’s convenient. We know the garrison layout and we’re flexible because we understand military life doesn’t always allow for complicated arrangements.
Does Salisbury Plain weather affect lessons much?
Sometimes, yes. Wind, fog, and winter conditions are more noticeable out here than in sheltered areas. We’ll only cancel if conditions are genuinely dangerous, though, because learning in varied weather actually benefits you. Better to experience challenging conditions with an instructor than face them alone after you pass.
Do you offer automatic lessons?
No — we teach manual lessons only.
Do you teach in the evenings or at weekends?
Yes. We offer weekdays and evenings but we don’t currently offer weekend lessons. Our lessons do fill up fast so they’re all subject to availability.
How long is a lesson?
Lessons are booked in 2‑hour blocks (£85).
What is your pricing?
What vehicles do you use?
How do I book?
I failed before with another instructor – can you help?
We can’t promise miracles, but we can promise a different approach. Over 150 five-star reviews say we’re pretty good at this. We’ll figure out what went wrong before, work on the specific issues, and get you test-ready properly. Loads of our students have been through failed tests with other instructors and passed with us.
Still Have A Question?
Getting You Test-Ready from Larkhill
Most lessons follow a clear pattern that works well for garrison residents. We pick you up in Larkhill, spend about 25 minutes driving to Salisbury while building your road skills, focus on test-standard practice in the city itself, then make the return journey. That’s 50 minutes of real driving experience plus your Salisbury practice time, which means every lesson packs in serious learning.
Larkhill’s location teaches practical skills. The garrison roads around the barracks teach awareness and navigation around a military environment, while the route out via the A345 develops proper A-road technique with faster speeds and varied traffic conditions. By the time you take your test, you’ve covered everything from garrison traffic to city centre driving.
Salisbury Plain position means weather plays a role in your learning. Wind across open downland, fog that settles in valleys, winter conditions that teach respect for changing road surfaces. That’s good preparation because real driving means handling whatever conditions turn up, not just driving on perfect sunny days.
The 25-minute journey each way isn’t wasted time because you’re building skills, learning proper junction approaches, and making that test centre route so familiar it becomes automatic rather than something you consciously navigate.

View All Testimonials“I cannot recommend Rich enough! Thanks to him I’ve passed with only 1 minor and I now feel like a confident and safe driver. He was a very patient and helpful instructor and made our lessons so much fun. I have really enjoyed learning to drive with him and will miss our lessons so much. Thank you! 😁”
“My son switched from another driving instructor to Rich at Passmaster as was not progressing with his existing instructor. Immediately felt an improvement in the teaching methods and his own confidence as a driver. He has now passed his practical driving test at the first attempt after 6 x 2 hour lessons with Rich. Probably could have taken the test earlier with the progress made, but booking an actual test slot is not easy at present, lucky to get a cancellation slot. Great communication throughout for each lesson booked. Perfectly happy with the service and highly recommend Rich at Passmaster if looking to book driving lessons. Will definitely use again when our other children reach the dreaded age of 17 !!”
“I couldn’t recommend Rich enough, Due to my situation i needed driving lessons in a short period of time all of which he was able to accommodate working around my busy and complex work schedule.
Instantly i got along with him very well and learning was easily due to his friendly nature and very good teaching styles.
I passed my extended driving test within 3 lessons with which was a true credit to Rich. Each lesson was thoroughly enjoyable and almost a shame i don’t have any more.
Thanks again Rich, it really was a pleasure you teaching me and spending time with you.”
“I found lessons with Rich amazing. He’s an incredibly calm and confidence boosting instructor. When I started lessons I was very nervous and he helped me grow into a confident driver who passed first time. Thank you Rich!”
“Couldn’t speak more highly of Rich, my experience learning with him was nothing short of amazing. I had bad experiences previously with other instructors which left me with no confidence and frustrated, and in a matter of 7 months I had passed first time!! Punctual, easy going, professional, patient, supportive – everything you need in a great instructor. There are also brilliant resources available. For anyone enquiring about lessons, I promise Rich is your guy!”
“Rich from Passmaster is an absolute legend, I love this guy. Passed first time all thanks to Rich. Every penny was worth it. He’s so chilled, laid back, and definitely an laugh and all round just and awesome driving instructor. Going to miss him.”
“I started driving lessons when I was 17, and have gone through 3 other driving instructors but found it just wasn’t the right fit. I’m 21 now and passed my test yesterday, and it was all thanks to Rich. After not driving for almost a year and a half I started again in January with rich and by April I have now passed. And I couldn’t have done it without him. He is genuinely the most lovely guy and puts you so at ease. Any mistakes made he doesn’t make you feel uncomfortable he tells you it’s fine and I would improve and we carry on. He explains everything in a way that you just understand and means you can remember easily. I would recommend Rich to anyone who asked me about driving lessons as I genuinely couldn’t think of anyone better to learn with. And I’ve tried a few… Thank you again, So So much!”
“Couldn’t recommend Rich more highly as a driving instructor! Patient, supportive and knowledgeable teacher who always put me at ease as an anxious driver, who helped me build my confidence and knew when to push me outside my comfort zone. Will be recommending Rich to anyone as he made learning to drive such a fun and enjoyable experience and helped me pass first time with just 6 months learning ! Will greatly miss my weekly lessons with him.”
“Rich was amazing through every single driving lesson we had together. I never had much interest in learning to drive previously but he turned something that I always thought I would dread into something I actually looked forward to and fun! Every lesson was planned and straightforward and I learned something new in each one. Rich is so calm and patient which is exactly what you want in an instructor, as well as being a laugh and making you feel at ease. I managed to pass first time with no minors and I owe it all to him, 100% recommend!!”
